The Leica III is a redefine camera made by Leica in 1933 and produced in parallel with the Leica II series.  The Leica III uses a coupled rangefinder distinct from the viewfinder. The viewfinder is set for a 50mm lens; use of shorter or longer lenses requires installing an alternate viewer on the accessory socket (Nakamura 2011).

Compare to the Leica II, Leica III has significant improvements. The main differences between the Leica III and the Leica II are:

  • Full range of shutter speeds, from 1 second to 1/500 plus Z (for Zeit, time in German, the shutter remains open while release button is depressed).
  • Separate dial to set the slow speeds: 1 second, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 and 1/20.
  • Addition of a lug on each side to fasten the neck strap.
  • Improvement of the optical system of the rangefinder, with a magnification ratio of 1.5. (Camerapedia)
Lecia Camera, especially Lecia III, had significant influence in China. Wei Nanchang, who is a famous photographer in China at that time, believed the Lecia is the best camera in the world. Wei is famous for his skills in photography and using Leica camera. In his book Portrait Photography, he stated that only the Lecia camera can make perfect Portrait (Wei 1956). Wei also became a volunteer model in a Leica Advertisement (Zhao 2011).

Except for Wei, there were other celebrities in China like Lecia camera. For example, Jiang Qing, the Madam of Mao, is a crazy Leica fan. She even forced Chinese camera factories to copy Leica's newest productions
