Foundation of Associated Press

May 22, 1846

Forerunner of the Associated Press (AP) was organized by a group of American publishers in order to acquire news and information from Europe. Primarily, correspondents and news bureaus aggregated as members in this non-profit, cooperative and incorporated association, and developed a system of news writing style that enables the news outlets to edit a story to fit its available publication area without losing the story's essentials. It includes the “inverted pyramid” formula begin with leads, 5 W and H questions, and other specific requirements on grammar, word selection, the writing style of consistency, clarity, accuracy, and brevity, which later became professional norms for journalism all over the world.
