Duck and Cover premieres

Perhaps the most famous educational film of all time, the Cold War civil defense film Duck and Cover leans into the most pressing fears within 1950s American society. Specifically engineered for use in elementary schools, the wide reach of this government-sponsored film demonstrates the immense power of educational films for propagandistic purposes. The use of a friendly animated turtle and cheerful music to convey grave subject matter and Cold War hysteria made the film palatable for young midcentury audiences, though its seems absurd to the contemporary viewer.
