CBGB OMFUG Opens in New York City

December 10, 1973

CBGB, heralded (by many, contested by just as many) as the birthplace of punk, only accidentally became one of the most visible breeding grounds for the burgeoning genre. Originally intended to be a "Country, Blue Grass, Blues" venue, the club frequently hosted promoter's young artists to pay the bills. These young artists helped to form 70s punk rock within CBGB's walls. The famous venue, long ago a staple of the evolution of rock music, closed it doors for good in September 2006.
