Founding of Organization for Transformative Works (OTW)

Date(s)
May 17, 2007

In 2007, a group of fans founded a nonprofit organization whose commitment was to "serve the interests of fans by providing access to and preserving the history of fanworks and fan culture" (https://www.transformativeworks.org). The OTW provides legal support to fans in cases where their work is threatened by lawsuit or conversely by commercial exploitation. They also host a number of other devoted fan platforms including Fanlore (a fandom wiki), Archive of Our Own (AO3, a fanfiction publishing site), Open Doors (a fan work safe haven and archiving space), and the Transformative Works and Culture (TWC) online academic journal, making it a truly wide ranging space of fan activity and creativity.
