Students in this course will gain both enrichment in the study of the queer past and experience in the challenging task of composing rigorous yet engaging intellectual texts and visualizations within an interactive environment aimed at a broad audience.

  • From the historical standpoint, after completion of this course students will be versed in the complexities of the histories and politics of sexuality and gender. Along with a broad understanding of the history and historiography of queer studies and gender politics, they will also gain a deeper understanding of two historical themes they will choose to focus on for their research during the semester.
  • From the perspective of redesigning of the site, students will become familiar with the history of media and interactivity, both in the recent digital era and in relation to historical design trends dating back to modernism. Students will also become familiar with the tenets of the successful visualization of time, and how timelines and other chronographies can be used to convey intellectual arguments.
  • To reinforce these historical and design lessons, students will be guided through practical creative assignments directly connected to the redesign of Through these assignments students will gain an understanding of how the historical, conceptual, and theoretical work of scholars needs to be structured on a website to best represent sexualities and genders past.
  • The practical assignments will provide training in the digital humanities, as students will work with the platforms WordPress, Omeka, and Timeline JS to craft essays and timelines online. Through this work, students will learn how to use content management systems, integrate online datasets with digital publishing platforms, manage image and video files, and gain a basic introduction to HTML and CSS.
