On June 29, 2007, the first iPhone was released by Apple. The inspiration for the format of iPhone came from Apple's previous touch-screen portable device, the Newton MessagePad. "Like the Newton, the iPhone is nearly all screen. Its form factor is credited to Apple's Chief Design Officer, Jonathan Ive" (Grossman, 2007). This first iPhone applied a large multi-touch capacitive touchscreen and got rid of the physical numeric keyboard; this new form soon dominated the smartphone market and continues to this day.
